Frequently Asked Questions
1.) Is it Safe to hunt in Africa?
Undoubtedly! Our hunting safaris are conducted with your safety as the highest concern. Namibia is one of the safest countries in all of Africa, and Gras Hunting Ranch is no exception. One must use the same precautions as when traveling in any other part of the world, such as not carrying large amounts of cash, wearing conspicuous jewelry, or frequenting areas which wouldn't be safe, no matter where you were in the world.
2.) What about Malaria or other diseases that are in the news?
Gras Hunting Ranch is located in a malaria-free area. No precautions are necessary. When traveling abroad, visit your physician or local travel clinic for a check-up and any prescriptions or inoculations that your doctor may feel are necessary.
3.) Do I need to purchase a new, expensive "safari" rifle?
That depends. If you have a rifle, .270 or bigger, that you shoot well now and are familiar with, use it. It is far more important to be able to shoot your rifle well, than to have lots of "magnum" power. Be sure to practice shooting in all field positions, and use premium ammunition. It is better to spend money on quality optics, than it is to purchase a new unfamiliar rifle. Please see our Rifles and Cartridges page for more information.
4.) I am getting a little older, and I don't get around as well as I used to. Can I still hunt in Africa?
Certainly!! Gras Hunting Ranch provides many different hunting methods. Some hunters prefer to hunt only on foot, while others enjoy the use of the hunting car. We also can set up blinds for hunters to observe game approaching a waterhole or feeding area. Hunters of all ages and physical abilities are welcome at Gras.
5.) Is this legitimate hunting, or is this a "canned" hunt.
This is definitely legitimate hunting. Game fences are used in some areas, but with over 92,000 acres of hunting territories, the animals are certainly free to move about.
6.) I see other hunting areas offering "package" hunts. Why aren't they available at Gras Hunting Ranch?
We don't offer package hunts at Gras because we feel that it is important for hunters to choose their preferred game while they are here and able to actually see what game is available. While we have excellent hunting with many fabulous trophies available, hunting is still hunting, and we don't want to see our clients pre-pay for a trophy that they may not take.
7.) Do I have to pay for transfers from the airport to the hunting ranch?
Absolutely Not! We pick you up in the terminal upon arrival, and transport you to the ranch. It is a comfortable drive to the ranch, with much beautiful scenery and game along the way.
8.) I have special dietary needs. Is Gras Hunting Ranch equipped to meet these needs?
Certainly!! We are more than happy to take care of any special dietary or accommodation needs you may have. Please let us know in advance, so we can have any needed supplies on hand for your arrival.
9.) Should I have the taxidermy performed in Namibia or in my home town?
If you have a taxidermist that you prefer to use, we can prepare your capes and horns for shipment to the destination of your choice. If you prefer to take advantage of the excellent exchange rate and use a Namibian taxidermist, we reccommend the best taxidermist in Southern Africa to our clients.
10.) In the instance of an emergency, are medical facilities adequate, and are the personnel at Gras medically trained?
Namibia has excellent, modern medical facilities. Additionally, ambulance and air ambulance services are readily available and of excellent quality. All of the hunting personnel at Gras are medically trained, and a comprehensive first-aid kit is always kept with the professional hunter.
11.) What about snakes or other "creepy-crawlies"?
While snakes are present at Gras, they are rarely, if ever, seen during the hunting season. Common-sense precautions are taken and the staff is fully trained in snakebite treatment. Keep in mind, that many hunters have been to Africa time after time and have NEVER seen a snake during safari.
12.) Why should I choose Gras Hunting Ranch?
